Driving home the other day after showcasing ARF’s adoptable animals in Bayamon my thoughts were on the problem of animal over-population. I felt proud of this great organization that in 2010 supported animal rescuers by finding homes for 80 rescued dogs and cats. ARF also sterilized 304 animals.
Here we are in 2011 and already the numbers are staggering. As of June 30th, 140 dogs/cats have been rescued, 101 have been adopted on and off the island, and 200 sterilized. As many of you already know ARF received a $10,000 grant from PetSmart Charities® to spay/neuter 434 animals this year. Also, for the first time, ARF is showcasing its adoptable animals at the PetSmart® retail store in Bayamon.
We’re happy that business is booming but so are the costs. The number of animals in the adoption program has doubled compared to last year, increasing ARF’s basic medical care and sterilization expenses. To prepare an animal for adoption can easily cost over $150. This medical cost is necessary prior to finding a home here in Puerto Rico or even showcasing at the PetSmart® store. The cost escalates once shipping to the states is involved. Yes, we are slowing the animal overpopulation and you can see the difference.
Our education program is touching 8 local schools and over 2,400 children. The municipality has been instrumental in re-moving dead or severely injured animals. And most important is the community, without your eyes many of these tasks would go unnoticed. Thank you!
This year ARF’s needs are greater than ever. We look forward to our two fund raisers, Harvest Moon Festival in November and St. Patrick’s Day Fund-raiser in March. These advents generate the bulk of the funds that support ARF’s programs. And, of course, we encourage you to participate in these events, volunteer, foster or help transport dogs north. And remember to share this cause with your friends and family. They too can help!
And lastly but just as important, ARF invites you to be part of its Board. Your skills, connection to the community and love for our furry friends is vital and greatly needed. Together, we can partner to save lives. Together we can go farther.
Don’t wait for extraordinary situations to do good; do good now!
